Supporting Clients Exploring GLP-1 Agonists: The Unique Role of Eating Disorder Dietitians

Posted By Josephine Money

As eating disorder dietitians, we’re in a truly unique position to support clients who are exploring the use of GLP-1 agonists. With our specialized training, we bring a nuanced, deeply compassionate lens to these conversations—one that honors the emotional complexity of body image and the broader pressures clients may be navigating. We don’t just talk about medications or food; we hold space for the full human experience.

For many clients, curiosity about GLP-1 agonists doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It often grows from a tangled web of weight stigma, societal expectations, diet culture, and real or perceived health concerns. That’s where our insight matters most. We understand the subtleties of body image distress and disordered eating patterns, and we’re trained to recognize when these medications could be helpful—and when they may pose risk.

Our role is both clinical and relational. We conduct thoughtful, comprehensive assessments to screen for eating disorder symptoms and identify any red flags or contraindications. But we also explore goals beyond weight loss—like energy, mobility, and emotional wellbeing—helping clients root their decisions in values and long-term health.

Communication is where our work shines. We meet clients with curiosity, not judgment. We ask the hard questions gently. We provide up-to-date, evidence-based information while supporting autonomy and self-trust. In a world that often pathologizes bodies, we work to create a space where clients can feel safe, seen, and empowered.

And we never work alone. We collaborate with medical teams to ensure clients receive cohesive, supportive care. We advocate fiercely for safety and help coordinate referrals when additional resources are needed.

At the heart of it all, we are advocates for our clients’ dignity and agency. As the conversation around GLP-1 agonists grows louder, our voices—rooted in compassion, clinical wisdom, and whole-person care—are more important than ever.
